About the Day

Ryan snapped this quick picture while hiking this past summer.

Come join us for a day of remembrance, running, community and fun as we celebrate the life of Ryan King. The event will be held on October 9, 2021 on the Festival of Champions Course at the Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, Maine and will include a remembrance for Ryan, a 5k cross country race and a 5k Croc race. (For those of you who might not know, Ryan proudly claimed to hold the fastest 5k time run in Croc shoes in several Maine counties.) Race in one race, race in both races or come as a spectator and friend of Ryan’s.

5K XC Race

The 5K Cross Country Race

Ryan smiling and happy in his occasional spot at the timing table .

The first race is the 5K cross country race. This is a true cross country course with a wide path and rolling hills. If you have run here before you may remember spots like “Sleepy Hollow”, the “Super Highway “and the “Gollywhoppers”. This is Maine Maritime Academy Cross Country Teams’ Home Course and one of Ryan’s favorites.

5K Croc Race

Edit “5K Croc Race”

The 5K Croc Race

Ryan wearing his Crocs given to him as a gift by members of the Maine Maritime Academy Cross Country Team after they signed them.

Ryan was always excited to boast about his running in Crocs. I like to think that Ryan used some of his silliness to encourage others to have fun with running or whatever their passions were. I also believe that Ryan thought that Crocs legitimately had their place in running. Whatever his reasons, I know he would be tickled to think of us hosting an actual 5K in Crocs. Do you have what it takes to hold the fastest time in Crocs on the Festival of Champions Course? (off brand croc style shoes are just fine too!)

COVID-19 is an ever-evolving situation which we will be monitoring closely. We will follow all local, state and national guidelines set forth at the time of the race. Based on the current restrictions we feel confident that our outdoor event will be possible. When you register you will be required to accept our waiver that states: "By entering the venue, I voluntarily assume all risks related to potential exposure to COVID-19 and confirm that I will adhere to venue, local, state and CDC guidelines. The most up-to-date and relevant health resources can be found on the CDC website and the Maine CDC website." All participants will be required to adhere to any COVID-19 precautions that are required for the safety of this event. This event is about community and we thank you in advance for you cooperation and understanding.
Absolutely! This is a day for remembrance and community as we celebrate the life of Ryan King. All are invited!
All food trucks seemed to be either booked or in permanent locations. But there will be PIZZA! There will be an assortment of pizzas from Alexia's Pizza in Belfast. Donations to help cover cost will be accepted.
All proceeds after race expenses will be donated to the Appalachian Mountain Club in honor of Ryan King. Ryan was as passionate about hiking as he was about running and spent many hours hiking along the AT as well as doing trail work and maintenance.

Take Route 1 to Belfast until you get to a traffic light. At the traffic light, turn onto Route 52 West. From the south this is a left turn, from the north it is a right turn. Look for the Bank of America/Athenahealth complex at this intersection. The school is ½ mile from the light, on the right, past the YMCA.

Spectators and virtual racers can get one too.")
We are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and are hopeful to proceed as planned with our outdoor event. However, if we are unable to host the race on October 9, 2021, we will reschedule for Spring of 2022. Date to be announced by January 1, 2022. If it is decided that we will be unable to host the event in the spring, then registration fees will be donated to the Appalachian Mountain Club.
